Exciting news! My book The Poetry Field was recently featured on the Weston Mercury website. 🌟 It’s truly fascinating to see my work gaining recognition, especially for a piece so close to my heart.
The article, titled “Weston poet celebrates the nature and history of Uphill in stone”, shines a light on a special poem of mine that has caught the attention of many. This poem sits etched in granite at the gates of the old church in Uphill, stirring curiosity among those who pass by.
For those who’ve wandered past the watchtower near the wharf and noticed the small, reflective verse – that’s mine. I penned the original 14-line sonnet back in 1999, inspired by the history and natural beauty of the Uphill nature reserve. In 2019, an eight-line excerpt was engraved at the kissing gate entrance to St Nicholas Church, immortalizing the words in stone. This poem, titled Son Et Lumière – French for sound and light – is part of my bestselling book Poetic Realms: Including Weston-super-Mare Seashore Trail. The book follows various local landmarks, each paired with poetry that brings the setting to life for the reader.
I wrote Son Et Lumière on location, with the goal of celebrating the flora, fauna, and deep-rooted history of Uphill, all the way back to Viking times. The poem captures the rebirth of the land during spring, symbolizing how nature awakens during Eastertide.
One of my favourite aspects? The way the sunlight reflects off the granite stone onto the old church – a quiet nod to the poem’s subject and setting.
I'm truly honoured by this feature and grateful for the opportunity to share the story behind the stone.
